10 Days and Counting
In 10 days, my Gramma will be 100.
And she lives with me.
My husband and I have raised 5 children who are out of the house, and our 6th just started Highschool. We discussed having children before we got married, as any wise couple should do, and completely agreed that we should have however many God blessed us with.
We did NOT discuss whether or not we should take in Gramma when she was old and feeble!
Don’t worry; my husband and I are on the same page with this. It’s just been a little bit of a curveball.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both…
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
-Robert Frost
Her generation has seen a lot of roads that were less traveled. Most of them were dirt or gravel. She went to a one-room schoolhouse until 9th grade. She remembers when sliced bread came out. Plastics didn’t exist. No McDonalds or Pizza Hut. Her mother was a telegraph operator. Not telephone; TELEGRAPH.
My Grampa fought in World War 2. Her youngest son was in the Vietnam War. There’s a lot of history here.
Her hands have buried a son. And her husband. Cradled toddlers while their father fought for their freedom. Milked cows. Picked corn. Canned tomatoes. Planted flowers.
Washed dishes with water from a well. Done laundry…SO MUCH LAUNDRY! Can you imagine??? If she has done 3 (JUST 3!) loads of laundry a week since she was 5 years old:
95 years x 52 weeks x 3 loads of laundry = 14,820 loads of laundry! And she’s still folding laundry! (It’s one of the things she enjoys doing to contribute to the home environment.) Yes, she ASKS for things to do!
She’s physically in good shape for being ALMOST 100 years old. Mentally, she’s with it (she has a great sense of humor!) She fixes her breakfast every morning, drinks coffee, does NOT eat green vegetables (!), and loves vanilla ice cream!
Who WOULDN’T bring in an addition to their family like this?!
Us peculiar people sometimes do crazy things to discreetly (or not so discreetly!) point UPP to Jesus!
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light: (1 Peter 2:9 KJV)
