Lesson:

Introduce the new verse by reading through the card. Have the student read though it also.

Give some background information: Chapter 6 starts by giving a timeframe (when King Uzziah died–by the way, he had reigned for 52 years and had been a good king most of his life, although he wavered at the end. A good reminder to all of us to constantly pray we will never lose our first love for Jesus.)

When Uzziah died, Isaiah had a vision. He saw the Lord sitting on a throne above everything else, and the train of His robe filled the temple. There were seraphims (which literally means “burning ones” as they burned to worship the Lord), each with 6 wings: 2 that covered their face, 2 their feet, and the other 2 they used to fly!

The seraphims flew around the throne crying Holy! Holy! Holy (which means without equal). When Isiah saw all this, he cried out “Woe is me! for I am a man of unclean lips!” because he recognized he was not worthy to be in the presence of God.

That’s when the angel brought the coal and put it on Isaiah’s lips, and the seraphim said: [hold up the verse card and read the verse].

And then Isaiah heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send?” and Isaiah replied, “Here am I; send me.” (Depending on the child, connect this to Samuel’s response in 1 Samuel 3:10 that we just memorized a few weeks ago. This makes a good segue into review time.)

Review the verse cards (shown above under Review).

(If you do them in the order above, James 5:12 makes a nice transition back into our verse card for today, simply by mentioning how often the Bible talks about how important it is to use our words wisely. Isaiah’s concern was that he was unworthy because of his unclean lips.)

Have the student read through Isaiah 6:7 2 or 3 times. Work with them until they can say it by memory without looking. Be sure to tell them what a good job they are doing!

Kit:

Using the disposable gloves in the kit bag, hold the piece of charcoal and use it to draw on the scrap paper. (Note: this is somewhat messy!)

Bible Literacy:

Help your student find Isaiah 6:7 in their Bible and underline or highlight it. Read it together again.
