Tell the backstory: The book of 1 Samuel tells the story of Samuel (surprise!) Chapter 1 actually starts with his mother, Hannah. She wanted a baby and asked God for a child. She promised that if He gave her a son, she would dedicate the child to work in the temple serving God. So God gave her a son (and gave her other children too). When Samuel was about 3 or 4 or 5, Hannah and her husband took him to the temple where he could live and serve the Lord. (She still saw him on a regular basis, and Eli, the priest, became kind of like his foster dad.)

So Samuel ministered to the Lord in the temple, and when he was about 12 years old, this story happened. He was in bed, almost asleep one night when he heard someone calling him: “Samuel! Samuel!” So Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “I heard you calling. I’m here. How can I help?” But Eli was almost asleep (kind of like your mom if you ever go into her room late at night) and said, “I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.” So Samuel did.

But it happened again! He heard a voice calling, “Samuel! Samuel!” So he got up right away and ran to Eli again and said, “I heard you calling. How can I help you?”

But this time Eli understood it was the Lord speaking to Samuel, so he told the child, “If you hear The Voice again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’”

So Samuel goes back to bed. (I can’t help but wonder what he was thinking as he walked back to bed that time: The Lord talking to ME?!? Why doesn’t He just talk to Eli? Will He call again?)

Samuel goes back to bed, and sure enough, just like Eli said, (read the Verse Card again).

The Lord goes on to tell Samuel several prophecies; some of them are about Israel, and some of them are about Eli and his sons. Eli had not trained up his children in the way they should go, and there are consequences to that.

Have the student read the bold print part of the verse card.

Review the verse cards above.

Come back to 1 Samuel 3:10. Have the student read the bold print words, then try to say it without looking.

Kit:

NOTE: There are different kinds of servants. In the picture on the verse card, there is a butler with a tray. Butlers are servants that get paid and go home every day to do their own thing. Indentured servants (basically like a slave) served for 7 years (or so) and then were free. The word DOULOS is a Greek word used for someone who has committed fully to serving the Lord for life, which is what God wants all of us to do.

1. Use scrap paper under your project (scrap cardstock is in your verse kit box).

2. Put disposable gloves on. Spread stain gel on the wooden plaque.

3. Carefully, throw away your gloves. Wash your hands.

4. While stain is drying, cut just outside the border of the DOULOS paper.

5. Apply glue (and water mist to thin glue) on back of DOULOS paper.

6. Spread glue evenly across the back of the paper.

7. Glue paper on to the wooden plaque.

8. Tie on the hanger.

9. Trace border with glue. Sprinkle on gold glitter.

10. Allow to dry before hanging.
