Lesson on Colossians 3:12
This verse is a little harder to memorize as it is in a different order than the fruit of the spirit, and is not in alphabetical order. NOTE: because there are 5 words at the end of the verse in a list, and 5 big words are hard to remember, I chopped them subconsciously into 2 groups: I read the first 3 slowly, one at a time, then grouped the last 2 together quickly. I read it through once, and then stopped and talked about all the adjectives (words that describe): God’s, chosen, holy, loved. (The word DEARLY is an adverb as it describes loved, and it ends in LY).
Then I had one of the students read the verse all the way through. I asked them if they knew what the word HUMILITY means. (Same root word as HUMBLE, which is the opposite of PROUD). COMPASSION was another one we had to define.
We talked about how this is in the book of Colossians, and as they had just recited the books of the NT, they knew where that book was (I showed them again on the list). We have mentioned a couple of times that these books are often called Paul’s Prison Epistles because they were written when he was in prison. (Epistle means letter). Literally, letters written by Paul while he was in prison.
After I read through the “clothes” again (the first 3 one at a time, slowly; the last 2 together quickly), the students read it through a time or two and then were asked to repeat the verse.
Kit:
Using the black card stock and the gingham print, trace around the gingerbread man to make a shirt and a pair of pants. (HINT: when using the fabric, fold the piece in half if you want the sleeves [or pants if you chose to make gingham pants] to be the same length/angle.)

Glue in place.

Cut around the buttons and decide where you want to place them. Cut the 5 character qualities out and lay them [in order] where you want them. Glue.
Add the googly eyes. Keep in mind that eyes are usually drawn/painted/placed halfway down the head.
Use the tiny verse and the reference if you want!

Bible Literacy:
Find Colossians 3:12 together in your student’s Bible. Try to find Colossians by saying the books of the New Testament instead of looking at the table of contents. Highlight the verse.
