Lesson:
Deuteronomy is in the Old Testament, which we learned last year. It is the 5th book of the Bible. Chapter 31 means 31 is the BIG number on the page (after you find Deuteronomy), and verse 6 means you have to search through the verses to find the little 6. (Both of these numbers are unrelated to the page number.)
This lesson is vocabulary rich! Courageous means to be full of courage (take time to discuss what being full of courage means. It does NOT mean the absence of fear!).
Forsake is an old term that means to abandon. Abandon is often a word we use to describe an abandoned building, so take time to flesh out what this means in their own words too. (be done with; never come back to; etc)

“He will never leave” refers to God being WITH us all the time. He is OMNIPRESENT. OMNI is Latin and means “all.” Hence, God is all-present.
We discussed how God is present with them in their livingroom. And then I added He is with me in my room too; how can that be?!? We had some fun with this (they always enjoy when I have to admit that I don’t know!)

Diving Deeper
Bible Literacy
Find Deuteronomy 31:6 in your Bible and highlight it.
Context
Deuteronomy 31:1-8
Who is speaking here? (Moses)
Who is he speaking to? (Israelites)
How old is he? (120years old)
In your own words, what is happening here? (Moses is saying he is not going into the New Country with them. They will have to go in without him, but not to be afraid of everything they are about to face because God is going with them.)
Who is going to lead the Israelites instead of Moses? (Joshua)
What phrase does Moses repeat to BOTH the Israelites (v6) and Joshua (v7)? (Be strong and courageous)
When something is repeated, by your parents or a teacher, what does that usually mean? (it’s important)
Why do you think this phrase is repeated?
(Is there another phrase that is repeated to both the Israelites and Joshua, v6&8?)
Song
I looked through YouTube for a song for this verse. There are a few, even for kids. You might want to check them out.
However, if you have a musical child, consider asking them their opinion of the music style after studying this verse and its context. All the music I could find was slow, had a long intro, and was NOTHING like I would’ve expected! I expected drums (marching into battle), perhaps even a nod to a funeral dirge before building to a STRONG and BRAVE crescendo! Perhaps an old person singing at first, and then a younger one joining in???
This field of music put to Bible verses is wide open. I would LOVE for some of our young people to get in on the cusp of this! I COULD SURE USE THE LINK to good, sound, Biblical music that is catchy for kids!
